What We Do

National Bible Society of Ireland

The purpose of the Bible Society is

to make the Holy Scriptures available
to
all people
in
a relevant format and
at
prices which can be afforded
and
to encourage and support Bible engagement
with
relevant resources and services

In a changing Ireland there is greater demand for the Bible in many languages. We can provide Bibles and New Testaments in over 40 languages and many others can be obtained on request. Several English translations are available on CD, DVD, CD-ROM, for MP3, MP4 and iPod.

Bible Reading Guides are produced annually and other guides and resources are published occasionally. Drifting?… an introduction to the Apostles’ Creed for young people was produced in 2007 following requests from college chaplains.

Material for Bible Sunday is produced annually and available for free download from the Society’s website www.biblesociety.ie

The National Bible Society of Ireland is part of the United Bible Societies, a worldwide fellowship of 141 national Bible Societies working in 200 countries. Bible Society in Ireland supports projects in about 30 countries each year:

Translation – the complete Bible is available in just 429 of the world’s estimated 6,500 languages. In 2006 the completion of 3 new Bibles and 31 new New Testaments was celebrated. No fewer than 6 new New Testaments were completed in Papua New Guinea. The United Bible Societies is currently involved in more than 500 translation projects worldwide and spends some US$11m a year on translation.

Distribution – In 2005 member Bible Societies of the UBS distributed worldwide more than 372.6 million Scriptures. NBSI supported a project in Romania where Bibles are provided to young people in residential homes.

Production – NBSI, through the UBS, provides paper for the printing of Bibles at the Amity Printing Press in Nanjing, China.

Engagement – Through The Bible the World’s Greatest Gift Catalogue individuals in Ireland supported a literacy project for adults in Mexico and an outreach initiative in Christian hospitals in India.
